Translation and Interpretation Technology
Technology can be a helpful tool when communicating across language barriers. Popular translation applications such as Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, and iTranslate can assist with translating text, speech, and images in dozens of languages.
While these tools may be useful for general communication, they may not always accurately convey complex real estate terminology, legal language, or contractual obligations. In some situations, working with a professional interpreter or translator, or referring a client to a REALTOR® fluent in the client’s preferred language, may be the best option.
Professional Interpretation and Translation Services
Local and national organizations, community centers, and city-managed programs may offer interpretation and translation services through certified agencies and trained professionals. Many providers offer:
- On-site interpretation
- Video and telephone interpretation
- Written document translation
When selecting a provider, consider using certified interpreters and agencies familiar with real estate terminology, contracts, and transactions. Brokerages, associations, and agents may also wish to include a disclaimer regarding the use of translation and interpretation services. The latest “Window to the Law” video from the National Association of REALTORS® highlights best practices for serving non-English speaking customers and how to avoid risks from potentially inaccurate translations.

Please note: In the US, official real estate contracts and legally binding documents must be in English. While translated versions exist as reference tools to help non-English speakers understand the terms, the English-language document is the only legally binding version.
REALTOR® Code of Ethics Translation
Help clients better understand the professional standards REALTORS® uphold by providing access to the REALTOR® Code of Ethics in English or Spanish.
Please note: The English version of the Code of Ethics is the only official version used for enforcement purposes.
